The EU has no money but wants to continue the war

from “Hungary Today”

(5 December 2025) (CH-S) The Hungarian government is appalled by the proposals made by some of its colleagues at the EU summit on 24 November regarding the US administration’s peace efforts in the Ukraine war. It states: “We are not prepared to mortgage our grandchildren’s future to finance a war in Ukraine that cannot be won.”

What is going on with the European Union? Directly from Hungary, contrary to the mainstream in our media.

“The European Union wants to continue the war, but since it has no money, it would take out a joint loan. We must say no to this. We don’t want to indebt our grandchildren because of Ukraine,” Prime Minister Viktor Orbán explained on his Facebook page as he summarised the events of Monday’s [24 November] EU summit.

Viktor Orbán said in the video: “The meeting discussed the 28-point peace plan presented by the Americans. This plan is complex and covers a thousand sub-topics...

After today’s video conference, I can say one thing with certainty: the European Union wants to continue the war, even though it does not have a single penny to supply military equipment to Ukraine, does not have a single penny to finance Ukraine’s operations, and does not have a single idea how to raise this money,” the head of government added.

The only ideas the EU had, according to Viktor Orbán, were that “every Member State should contribute” – which Hungary rejected – or that “we should take out a joint loan”.

“We are not prepared to mortgage our grandchildren’s future to finance a war in Ukraine that cannot be won,” Viktor Orbán declared.

Speaking on Tuesday at the inauguration of Flextronics’ new NextGen Mobility production facility, the Prime Minister warned that Europe’s economic prospects would be hampered by the ongoing war and the pressure to finance military spending through higher taxes and long-term debt. “If we spend our money on that, there will never be enough left to develop the industry”, he said.

Foreign and Trade Minister Péter Szijjártó reported that the peace plan represents a great opportunity for the return of peace to Central Europe, but that it is clear that Brussels and European leaders have no interest in accepting it. “Not only are they not interested, but it is also obvious that they are already thinking about how to torpedo, undermine and make this peace plan impossible”, he said.

The chief diplomat also expressed the view that “the only acceptable behaviour on the part of European politicians, taking into account the aspects of humanity and reason, would be to support the US peace efforts and this 28-point plan unconditionally and with all their might”. “There is no aspect that would improve with the prolongation of the war. Ukraine has already lost a great deal because of the war, and Europe has also lost a great deal as a result of Brussels’ reactions to the war, so it is time to put an end to all this,” he continued.

In conclusion, the minister emphasised that anyone who works against the peace agreement is in fact also working against Europe and Ukraine. “Because let’s think about it, if Ukraine had not been forced into further fighting in April 2022, but had signed the Istanbul agreement at that time, how much better off would Ukraine have been.

Every day that passes makes the situation worse, and the only outcome will be a worse agreement. So, it is time to accept this agreement,” he concluded.
