Giving up neutrality means giving up Switzerland
Is that what the Federal Council wants?
by Philipp Gut*
(14 August 2026) Neutrality is a core value of Switzerland. And what are the political elites doing? They are wilfully destroying it. The Federal Council has fallen prey to a preposterous line of reasoning and now believes that the security of the country and its people can only be guaranteed by joining forces with NATO and the EU – an epoch-making fallacy.

Both history and the present day demonstrate just how wrong this is. Neutrality has spared Switzerland from two world wars and other armed conflicts. And it continues to protect the country today from being drawn into the bloodbaths of the power blocs.
When one sees how recklessly, and with rhetoric that seems downright bellicose, NATO and the EU are adding fuel to the fire in Ukraine – and how little interest they have in a solution or in peace – one cannot help but feel a sense of dread. What is now half a warring party could become a whole one.
Swiss neutrality acts as a protective shield against such imperialist temptations from the great powers, against interference in foreign affairs, and against the highly dangerous importation of war and violence. It guarantees – or at least promotes – peace, security and prosperity.
History bears this out as well. How often have citizens in other countries – including our neighbouring states – been dispossessed by the misguided and, not infrequently, criminal policies of their own and foreign governments? Neutral Switzerland protects property. And it attracts assets, investment and international organisations to the country. This, too, is due in large part to its neutral status. The world sees it as a safe haven.
It follows that whoever abandons neutrality abandons Switzerland, gutting the Confederation and beating the living soul out of it. And turns it into a war puppet of others.
