A nuclear “Armageddon” by Western elites?

(23 February 2024) The opinion that “elites” or “experts”, plutocrats, “blue bloods” or “global young leaders” can make better decisions per se than the public has proven to be a mistake time and again. The current wars are planned, initiated, waged, or “merely” tolerated by small elite circles who think they know better. This is a mockery of every human being and every democracy – after all, in the nuclear age, everyone is affected by these decisions. It is a fatal mistake to want to rely on the “common sense” of these elites these days.
“Battle of decision”
If you look at the world, you can see how a small circle of people in the USA1 are forcing a “battle of decision” on the whole world: With the NATO states in tow, they are waging a ruinous proxy war against Russia. This threatens to turn Europe into a battlefield.2 They are arming themselves against China and trying to involve Japan, South Korea and, if possible, India3 and Vietnam4 in their plans. There is a dramatic escalation in the Middle East – with unpredictable consequences. Iran, the Arab states, and European NATO states are becoming increasingly embroiled in the war in Gaza and Yemen.5
Megalomania and profit interests
In contrast to the Second World War, the escalation is taking place against the backdrop of extensive nuclear armament.6 In addition to the USA, the nuclear powers Russia, China and Israel are now directly involved.7 The Russian government has declared that it regards the USA, France and Great Britain as a single nuclear power8 and will act accordingly.
The elites in the USA are playing poker on a powder keg, obviously caught up in the mistaken belief that they can emerge unscathed from any inferno:9 an extremely dangerous amalgam of megalomania, greed, and callousness, including criminal behaviour.10 Other parts of the global elite are holding back (and/or profiting – according to the motto: after a war you can buy up cheaply or make money from reconstruction).11
We no longer live in the 19th century when wars could be played down as regional events. In the 21st century, everyone’s existence is at stake: the possibility of nuclear overkill, the ongoing contamination from DU weapons, the pathogens from bioweapons laboratories12 that cause disease and death, the use of AI for “military” purposes.
The unspeakable role of the mass media
The “mainstream media” play an unspeakable role and must now almost be regarded as the “better PR offices” of governments.13 Their links with the elites and their state representatives have reached an extent reminiscent of the 1940s.14 In Germany, the “mobilisation of the masses” has reached almost Goebbelian dimensions, if one thinks of the “anti-right-wing demonstrations” initiated by state “nudging”, which include unconditional solidarity including the supply of weapons.15 Has the judgement of many already been suspended (Hannah Arendt)?
The global South has emancipated itself
If we look at developments outside the Western world, we can see that many countries in the Global South have emancipated themselves from Western domination and dictates over the last two decades. The BRICS states, the Shanghai Cooperation Organisation and the development of the New Silk Road are an expression of this upheaval. The elites of the “Western values” can no longer dictate unquestioningly. This upheaval has been coming for a long time. As early as 2008, Kishore Mahbubani called on the West not to oppose this development, but to benefit from it and cooperate ...16
This development also includes the emancipation of West African states from French paternalism17 or Ethiopia’s accession to the BRICS states. These are the first steps towards economic prosperity and peaceful cooperation – away from the constraints of decades of hidden colonialism by Western elites, who have secretly robbed these countries of their wealth for decades.
The West’s policy is scandalous
The policy pursued by the warmongering circles of the West is more than criminal! Instead, of gaining wealth or influence in an honest way, they are willingly accepting a war against the rest of the world, the outcome of which could be a nuclear overkill for everyone.
We don’t know what the future will bring, but this situation is scandalous!
For the current and future generations, it will be a matter of democratically binding megalomaniacs, limiting their power and no longer allowing them to make decisions on wars, flight, hunger, and displacement.
